Degree Structure and Courses
Degree Structure and Courses of the Master’s program in Business Mathematics
In this research-oriented Master's program students will learn to take up complex problems from the business and economic sciences and to solve them using mathematical methods even beyond the limits of the current state of knowledge. Taking the requirements and changes in the professional world and the interdisciplinary references into account the program is designed to teach the necessary subject-specific methods and to expand the mathematical as well as business and economic skills and knowledge that enable students to work scientifically, to apply and critically classify scientific findings and to act responsibly.
In the first two semesters you will deepen your knowledge of mathematics and business and economics through lectures and seminars. In doing so, you can choose from an extensive range of courses offered primarily by the Departments of Mathematics, Business Administration and Economics. In the 3rd semester at the latest, you will be introduced to current research and in this way prepared for the Master's thesis, with which you will complete your studies in the 4th semester.
Of the courses in the first 3 semesters, which comprise a total of 90 ECTS credits, at least half must be completed in the field of mathematics and at least one third in the field of business and economics. The remaining modules can be chosen from the Master's degree programs in Business Mathematics, Mathematics, Business Administration and Economics.
In the fields of mathematics as well as business and economics, one specialization each must be chosen. Possible specializations within mathematics are "Applied Mathematics" and "Probability Theory and Mathematicat Statistics". Possible specializations within business and economics are "Finance, Banking and Insurance", "Operations & Supply Chain Management", “Business Analytics” and "Economics". At least 30 credit points must be completed in the specialization within mathematics, and at least 21 credit points in the specialization within business and economics.
The Master's thesis can be written either in the field of mathematics or in the field of business and economics and should also show references to the other field. With a successful completion, you will then have proven your qualification for a doctorate in the subjects of mathematics or business and economics.
Approval of the curriculum (study plan)
In order to ensure a meaningful course of study, the range of modules must be approved by the examination board after consultation with a study advisor or a university lecturer from the Department of Mathematics.
To do this, please send the completed pdf document (study plan) by email to the chair of the examination board(natalie.neumeyer"AT"uni-hamburg.de). Please also submit a printout of the STiNE credit account.
Seek advice on a sensible study plan as early as possible. Final approval can then be given at a later date.
Please note that, usually, no more than four seminars (each worth 6 CP) are allowed to be included in the degree program. In the areas of specialization in business administration, it is usually only possible to participate in one seminar.
Modules that you would like to take in the supplementary area (maximum 15 CP) (i.e. modules that do not belong to one of the areas of specialization "Applied Mathematics", "Probability Theory and Statistics", "Business Analytics", "Economics", "Operations & Supply Chain Management", "Finance, Banking and Insurance" - in particular method modules of the Master's degree course in business administration), please obtain prior approval from the chair of the examination board. When choosing modules, you should avoid content overlaps with other selected modules.
Please note that BSc modules are only recognized in exceptional cases upon justified application submitted to the examination board.
If you are planning a study period abroad, please clarify the recognition of courses with the chair of the examination board in advance.
Form for approval of the range of modules (curriculum)
If you exceed the regular length of study, you must take part in a study counseling session before the end of the sixth semester.
Please note that the grades of all modules approved in the curriculum (except seminars) are included in the overall grade of the certificate (unlike in the Bachelor's degree program in Wirtschaftsmathematik).
