March 11, 2026, marks the 15th anniversary of the devastating 2011 Tsunami in Japan, taking more than 18,000 lives and crippling a Nuclear Facility in Fukushima. NumGeo Group members have worked to improve capacities to prepare for such disasters over many years. The latest contribution:
J. Behrens is communicating editor of the book Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard and Risk Analysis - A Cookbook, recently published by Springer, Cham. This title represents the first state-of-the-art reference for probabilistic tsunami hazard and risk analysis (PTHA/PTRA) and was developed with support of COST Action 18109 AGITHAR.
Structured like a Cookbook, it contains the main "ingredients" of PTHA/PTRA in 8 chapters and 25 "recipes" - published examples of the application of PTHA/PTRA workflows - giving relevant information to diverse user groups. Decision makers, disaster managers, as well as scientists may benefit from the information, which is available open access.
From its publication end of January 2026 until now it was accessed almost 60,000 times, which is a sign of its relevance to exposed coastal communities.
