First-Year Orientation
Dear future (business) mathematicians, math teachers and master students!
Soon you will spend your first days in the Geomatikum and the MIN Forum at the University of Hamburg. We welcome you warmly and want to make your start easy and smooth: At the end of September/beginning of October, we will organize the "Orientation for first-year students", short: OE. The OE is an official event by the university, but you are not forced to attend. Your lectures start shortly after the OE, so there will be no scheduling conflicts.
We offer events to prepare you for math studies at the University of Hamburg. This text is suited for you if you begin to study B.Sc. Mathematik or B.Sc. Wirtschaftsmathematik. If you aim to study to be a teacher, please also read the "teaching degree" block. If you are starting your studies for a masters degree, you are familiar with studying and how universities work, so you can skip right to the masters block.
Please note that by default, all events will primarily be held in German, as the bacherlor studies are done in German. However, many events can be attended without any knowledge of German, these will soon be marked by an I in the timetable at the bottom of this page.
Why OE?
Studying at a university differs greatly from school. You learn more in a shorter time frame, topics are more abstract and you have more freedom. Therefore, you have to adapt to the new circumstances, and we want to help you with that. During the OE, you will receive tips for your studies, and - maybe more importantly - get to know other students.
What happens during the OE?
Getting to know people, understanding life at university and lots of fun!
The OE is organized by us, students. We are always there to answer questions. Most important is getting to know each other and having fun. Soon we will publish our timetable at the bottom of this page, where you can get a feeling for what will happen. However, we will not yet share what the abbreviations mean. Besides cozy evenings, there will be three day trip from the 9th to the 11th of October as the grand finale.
Aside from getting to know each other, we also want to show you the university. Where are rooms, how does math work at university or what can you do after your studies?
What else is important?
On the days of the 1st until the 7th of October the "Vorkurs für Studienanfänger:innen der Mathematik" will take place. We recommond to attend this course, as it not only recaps school mathematics, but also introduces basic concepts of university mathematics. As this course will take place until midday, the OE events will only start at 2 pm on these days. More information on the course can be found here.
Maybe you have seen already that the University of Hamburg uses the "Studien-Infonetz" (StiNe). We will show you how to enroll for the first lectures, so don't have to worry about that before the OE.
When and where do we start?
We will meet on Thursday, the 29th of September at 9 am in the lecture hall H1 in the Geomatikum (Bundesstraße 55).
