About ERASMUS+

Introduction

ERASMUS+ is a European mobility program which gives students the opportunity to study at a European partner university for several months. The ERASMUS+ program is based on a resolution by the Council of the European Union from 15th June 1987. Since its initiation, more than 1,5 million students have participated in the ERASMUS+ program.

Erasmus of Rotterdam

The ERASMUS+ program is named after the Dutch philologist and philosopher Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536) who spent important years of his lifetime in several different European countries, including France, Italy, the UK, Switzerland, and Germany. Erasmus of Rotterdam was one of the most distinguished and influential representatives of European humanism in his age with great impact on the European idea.

Goals

The ERASMUS+ program supports mobility and exchanges for students and teaching staff of European universities. ERASMUS+ helps strengthen professional qualifications, but also aims at enhancing language skills and other intercultural skills, providing students with a different perspective on their study discipline. Exchanges will lead to useful and long-lasting international contacts. Likewise, exchange students will enrich the diversity at their host university with their own social, cultural, and educational background. In this way, students will acquire useful soft skills, enhance their flexibility, all while improving their professional qualification. In conclusion, the ERASMUS+ exchange program offers a unique opportunity for students to acquire useful intercultural, professional, and life experience.

Student Exchange

The ERASMUS+ program is part of a broad European mobility concept that allows our Mathematics students to spend one or two semesters of their undergraduate studies at the Mathematics Department of one of our European partner universities. Likewise, incoming Mathematics students from our partner universities are welcome to study one or two semesters at our Mathematics Department at the University of Hamburg. The individual partnerships with universities are based on bilateral contracts which specify capacities for student exchange and teaching mobility.
