Enrolment and Duration
- Enrolment: Doctoral candidates at Universität Hamburg must enroll as members of Universität Hamburg. They must submit their enrollment application to Campus Center. To do so, please follow the link in your admission letter to the STINE portal.
At Universität Hamburg doctoral students must be enrolled for the duration of their doctoral studies in accordance with the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) and the MIN Doctoral Degree Regulations.
- Duration: As a rule, doctoral studies in the natural sciences take three to four years. This period is devoted to research on a specific topic and concludes with a dissertation (written doctoral thesis) and oral defense (presentation and discussion). If the doctoral dissertation is not submitted within the admission period of four years and the oral defense is not held within the admission period it is possible to extend the admission period by submitting the application for extension of admission to doctoral procedures (scanned / electronic signatures are permitted) to the academic office.
Submission of the dissertation / Application to open the doctorate proceedings
We only process applications to open the doctorate proceedings (i.e. submission of the dissertation for evaluation) electronically! Application documents in paper form (except 1 examination copy of the dissertation in paper form for archiving purposes) are not requested, but also not accepted!
The following application documents must be prepared in electronic form for the online application to open the doctorate proceedings and submitted compulsorily as part of the online application:

- or a studium.uni-hamburg.de email address
- or an email address of the email domains chemie.uni-hamburg.de, informatik.uni-hamburg.de, zbh.uni-hamburg.de, hs.uni-hamburg.de, physik.uni-hamburg.de, physnet.uni-hamburg.de, uke.de or zmnh.uni-hamburg.de
to communicate and submit the above mentioned documents.
Publication of the dissertation
After a successful disputation, you will receive a preliminary certificate from the study office, which does not entitle you to bear the doctorate. In addition, we will send you a personalized "routing slip for the publication of the dissertation". If the printed copy deviates from the test copy, approval must be obtained from the person specified in the protocol.
Publication form |
Study office |
Department library |
State Library |
E-dissertation | 0 | 1 | 2 |
Print medium | 0 | 1 | 35 |
kumulative dissertation | 0 | 1 | 6 |

On the routing slip you confirm the submission of the deposit copies as well as the electronic publication at the appropriate office. The State Library sends a letter to the Mathematics Study Office for every publication that has taken place, which is sufficient as proof of publication.
For information on publishing your dissertation in the State Library, please refer to this FAQ.
The dissertation should be published within one year. After the publication you will receive the doctoral certificate. This enables you to carry the doctorate.
We would like to point out that the issuing of the certificate after the disputation can take a period of 1-2 months.
Termination of Supervision Relationship/Discontinuation of doctorate
If for compelling reasons a supervisor chooses to terminate the supervisory relationship during the course of dissertation work, then he or she must inform the doctoral committee chair without undue delay of the reasons therefor.
After the agreement ends, the doctoral candidate can look for a new supervisor.
Fill out and submit the
