The Master's program in Mathematical Physics is a joint program of the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics at Hamburg University. It is complemented by contributions from leading scientists of the Theoretical Physics Group at DESY, one of the world's leading centres for the investigation of the structure of matter.
The Master's Program in Mathematical Physics is a research oriented program geared towards fundamental research at the interface of mathematics and physics. Its participants acquire familiarity with the fundamental concepts of modern theoretical physics as well as proficiency in pure mathematics. Ideally, graduates of the programme are able to understand current research in theoretical physics as well as to work actively with advanced mathematical concepts and structures.
The program is embedded into an active research environment involving broad expertise and numerous topics from mathematical physics. The activities of the participating research groups are complemented by a number of collaborative activities and institutions. In particular, this includes the following research and training clusters:

- Excellence Cluster: Connecting Particles with the Cosmos
- Research Training Group GRK 1670: Mathematics Inspired by String Theory and Quantum Field Theory.

These structures offer joint courses and seminars on a wide variety of topics in mathematical physics that are open to participants of the program. The close collaboration between the research groups also provides a wide variety of topics for research projects and master thesis.
