It is named after Shiing-Shen Chern, who was a doctoral student at the University of Hamburg from 1934 to 1936 advised by Wilhelm Blaschke. Chern held positions at, among other institutions, the University of Chicago and UC Berkeley, where he co-founded the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI). Chern received numerous awards, including the Wolf Prize and the U.S. National Medal of Science, and is regarded as one of the most important geometers of the 20th century.
