Multi-scale problems in fluid mechanics
Several examples from thermo-acoustics, aerothermodynamics,
and meteorology will motivate a brief introduction to
multiple scales asymptotics. In particular, we will touch
upon the central notions of "distinguished limits" between
multiple small parameters and "sublinear growth conditions".
The latter are the key to deriving equations for the slow
variability of multi-scale asymptotic functions.
Systematic application of these techniques has recently led
to a unified mathematical framework for theoretical meteorology,
and this will be summarized in the second part of the lecture.
The lecture closes with a summary of recent further developments
which take advantage of this generalized mathematical approach
to meteorological modelling.
