Astronomical Surveys and the "Virtual Observatory"
Astrophysics is a science largely driven by
systematic surveys. Early examples for such surveys
are star atlases and catalogues; more recently, there
are also more specialised surveys targeting a multitude
of different object classes, such as galaxies or quasars.
As a case description I discuss a large quasar survey initiated
and largely conducted at the Hamburger Sternwarte, which produced
important scientific results in its initial target field, but also
produced highly interesting side benefits for astronomers working
in other fields. In the future, employing general astronomical surveys
for specific projects will be one major working mode of research, but
highly challenging given the dramatic increase of data available in
public archives. Current modes of data mining are clearly reaching a
limit, and the world-wide "Virtual Observatory" initiative(s)
aim at providing new ways to access and exploit such databases.
I give a brief overview describing some of the envisaged prospects.
