Official opening of the SIAM Student Chapter Hamburg
On April 9, 2015, finally, the time had come: The official opening ceremony of our chapter!
Professor Angelika Bunse-Gerstner (University of Bremen) was invited to give a talk on "Aspects of Ensemble Data Assimilation" within the framework of the Lothar-Collatz-Colloquium. She explained techniques to include observation data into a prediction model and the challenges thereof. After satisfying the curiosity of the audience, the whole group of 35 attendees moved up to the 15th floor of the Geomatikum building to enjoy the view and to listen to another short talk of Prof. Bunse-Gerstner. This time she highlighted the challenges of collaboration between universities, as fundamental research institutes, and midsize industry, which is interested in solutions close at hand. However difficult these collaborations are, both parties need each other and it is essential to find a way to work hand in glove.
As Head of the Department of Mathematics, Professor Michael Hinze addressed the audience and expressed his satisfaction with the formation of a SIAM student chapter in Hamburg. He stressed the importance of networking and wished our new chapter well.
At last Petar Sapun, our chapter president, thanked our supporters, Prof. Gasser, Prof. Hinze, Prof. Wollner, and our Guest Prof. Bunse-Gerstner kindly. Then Petar declared the chapter opened as well as the buffet. Here, we would like to thank Prof. Jörn Behrens for taking pictures of the event, and several of our members again, for kindly providing "foodal" support! It was delicious!
As the evening went on, the amount of food was minimized and the sun went down steadily to grant us a beautiful sunset over the skyline of Hamburg. It was an amazing celebration party!
