
The curve evolution reduces the set of vertices of the original polygon to the subset of
vertices containing important shape information. Since the original set is only reduced by
irrelevant vertices, the remaining (important) ones did not change their position.
The image shows the shape of africa in three different steps of the evolution, the bottom line shows the merged shapes.
This property makes it easy to switch between the levels in the evolution hierarchie: main features can be found in a high level of abstraction, the corresponding vertices can easily be extracted in all lower levels, e.g. in the original image.
This property is a great advantage compared to algorithms using differential equations,
