It is a simple and natural observation that
maximal convex parts of objects determine visual parts.
Our curve evolution allows to decompose the object in different abstraction levels, whereby more significant parts are recognized in higher abstraction levels.
Parts obtained are illustrated in the left Figure. On the highest level of the shape hierarchy (f) the evolved silhouette of the rabbit is decomposed into two maximal convex arcs. The visual parts enclosed by these arcs represent the most relevant object parts, those are the body and the head together with the front legs.
This means that on a lower level
only the inherited parts are further divided.
For example, on the level (e)
only the parts obtained on level (f) are further divided, the same with
parts in level (d), which are only a subdivision of parts obtained in (e).
