The ILLC-Day in Bonn will be the third installment of a series of one-day workshops connecting logical research in Bonn and at the ILLC in Amsterdam. The first event was the LiB-Day in Amsterdam (June 30, 2003), the second was the ILLC-Day in Bonn.

• Marian Counihan (ILLC): Natural language in the psychology lab
  
  My talk describes an empirical investigation into natural language interpretation, in the (very) circumscribed context of a reasoning tutorial on Wason's selection task, and discusses the challenges for both cognitive psychologists and linguists that arise from the data.
  
• Pjotr Labenz (ILLC): On common knowledge in conversation
  
  The received view is that in order for a felicitous utterance to be made, its presuppositions must be common knowledge. That, however, leads to a paradox, because it seems very difficult to obtain common knowledge in finite and reasonably short time. I will suggest one way out of the paradox using games accounting for the quantity maxim.
• Merlijn Sevenster (ILLC): Non-literal meaning and signaling games
  
  If one says "George W. Bush is a pig", one does not mean to say that George W. Bush is a pink animal with a tail. Instead, one intends the hearer to give this sentence its non-literal meaning. In this talk, I will elaborate on Lewis' signaling games to account for the conventionalization of non-literal meaning. Following Sally (2003) I will argue that the elaborated signaling game is correct in predicting that people are more likely to communicate non-literally, if they are more sympathetic to each other.
• Oren Schwartz (Johns Hopkins University): CVNet - on Neural Network Interpretations of OT
  
  CV Theory is a skeletal subset of phonology that deals with syllabification. Although it is exceedingly simple in form, it still contains a good deal of what makes linguistic analysis interesting and difficult from a computational perspective. CVNet is an implementation of an Optimality Theoretic model of CV Theory. The talk will introduce CV Theory as a toy domain and discuss the main correlations between Optimality Theory as a symbolic linguistic formalism, and its implementation in a neural network.
