BIGS Student Afternoon on History and Philosophy of Mathematics

Friday, February 14, 2003

Mathematisches Institut; Wegelerstraße 10

Kleiner Hörsaal (1.OG); 3:00 pm

In connection with the conference FotFS IV, the Bonn International Graduate School BIGS-MPA is organizing a BIGS Student Afternoon on History and Philosophy of Mathematics.

All students of mathematics, philosophy, physics, and history are cordially invited to attend two talks by Volker Peckhaus (Paderborn) and Ivor Grattan-Guinness (London) in the Kleiner Hörsaal at Wegelerstraße 10. There will be more talks of a more specialized nature at the conference on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Of course, all students are welcome to participate in the entire conference.

Prof. Dr. Volker Peckhaus will be talking at 3:45 pm on ``The Historiography of Mathematics and Logic''. Professor Peckhaus studied mechanical engineering, history, philosophy and German literature at the RWTH Aachen and received his doctoral degree at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1990. In 2002, he was appointed as Chair in Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Paderborn. His area of specialty is the history of logic, and his lecture will survey the role of logic for the historiography of mathematics.

Prof. Dr. Ivor Grattan-Guinness will be talking at 5:15 pm on ``History or heritage? Historians and mathematicians on the history of mathematics''. Professor Grattan-Guinness is an expert on History of Mathematics in all its width. He studied mathematics, history of science, logic and philosophy of mathematics in Oxford and at the London School of Economics and received his doctoral degrees at the University of London. He held a professorship for the history of mathematics and logic at Middlesex University until his recent retirement. He has treated a large variety of subjects (logic, philosophy of mathematics, applied mathematics, biographical studies, numerology in classical music and many others) in several books and countless research papers. In his talk, he will be discussing the special way mathematicians deal with the history of their subject.

Before the first talk there will be a formal opening of the conference FotFS IV (starting at 3 pm). Between the talks, there will be tea and coffee for all participants in the foyer in front of the Kleiner Hörsaal.
