Abstract: We will discuss the historic background of the techniques of multiplier ideal sheaves and their applications to problems in algebraic geometry, culminating in an analytic proof of the finite generation of the canonical ring for compact complex algebraic manifolds of general type. The analytic proof depends on a general nonvanishing theorem.
