Counting problems in hyperbolic spaces Abstract: On can associate to a group of isometries acting discretely
on a metric space a function which measures the number of points in
the orbit
contained in some ball of radius R. This function is called the
orbital function and any control of it when the radius R is getting
large is called a counting theorem. Counting problems in a hyperbolic
setting have been studied for more that 60 years now from both
dynamical and analytic perspectives. In this talk, we will focus on
the dynamical ones developed by Margulis seminal PhD work and widely
improved after. We will show how powerful is the method but how
crucial is the assumption so that people working this research area
are mainly concern about how to drop it at the moment. We will
conclude with proposing a new method relying on Brownian motion which
actually drops the assumption but gives weaker results.
