On 31.08. - 02.09.2016 the Dept. of Mathematics of the University of Hamburg, Germany, hosted the

Workshop on
Industrial and Applied Mathematics 2016

combining the

5th Symposium of German SIAM Student Chapters

and the

MathMods Alumni Meeting

WIAM16’s main goal was to bring people studying applied mathematics and related sciences together for a three-day-long meeting in Hamburg, where they could present their research, share the experience with international teams and spend time learning about the work done in the industry.

What are advantages or difficulties of working in a team made up of young scientists coming from different backgrounds? What are the common practices in research in different countries? We wanted to start a discussion on those and many other questions by showing work and presentation style of participants’ individual research.

With the main focus on application, we were happy to introduce a distinctive segment of WIAM16 concentrating on the difference of doing research at a company in comparison to a university. Industrial talks, as well as the subsequent reception, gave all participants and guests a unique chance to share their experience in academia and industry.

UPDATE: The slides of most of the presented talks are linked in the program schedule below.

  • Street Art

Street Art has become an integral part of urban environment. On our tour we will discover hidden places, famous artists and new pieces on the walls of Hamburg’s most special districts. Get prepared for OZ, Push, Zonenkinder and many more.

    Hafen City

Europe's biggest inner-city development lies right next to the river Elbe in the heart of Hamburg. Step by step a new district evolves to find answers to urgent questions of urbanism. We will cover topics such as flood protection, sustainable construction and alike.

    • Hamburg is the second largest city of Germany and is home for 1.8 million people. It is located at the banks of the river Elbe – between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea – and fascinates by its hanseatic atmosphere, its cultural diversity and the combination of historic and modern architecture.

      The harbour

With the largest seaport in Germany – and the second largest in Europe – the city is a center of international trade. Visitors can explore the harbor by impressive boat sightseeing trips which offer special panorama on Hamburg. The historic Speicherstadt (warehouse district) built largely in the 19th century is also worth visiting. Here, you can explore the history of trade in Hamburg in different museums and see how traders in past and present cope with the varying water levels of the Elbe.

      Culture

Hamburg is a lively metropolis, seven days per week, with a wide diversity of restaurants, cafes and shopping areas. In the evening and night you can enjoy the variety of cultural venues. You can choose between the program of 31 theatres, 6 music halls and 10 cabarets. Or you enjoy yourself in one of Hamburg’s clubs, discotheques and bars, for example, at the world-famous Reeperbahn or in the more fashionable district Schanzenviertel.
