Data mining is a very popular, but also a controversially discussed theme.
The development
of computer technology and the enormous amount of collected data by various
business, scientific, and governmental organizations has led to a great
demand for data analysis in situations where standard statistical methods
cannot successfully be applied. Reasons for this may be
-
computational difficulties because of a large number of cases and/or
variables,
- missing, outlying, and/or erroneous data,
- heterogeneity of datasets,
- new and complicated data formats,
- imprecise and exploratory research questions.
The workshop brings together experienced data analysts and
computer scientists from companies and
applied sciences with academic statisticians. New developments in methodology
are confronted with the complicated data analytic problems and solutions from
fields such widespread as marketing, genetics, medicine, astronomy and
insurance. The focus is on the data analytic and statistic aspects of the data
mining process, on understanding, proper interpretation and the limits of data
analytic methodology. This comprises classification and regression methods,
clustering, model selection and data visualization. There will be
interdisciplinary presentations and open discussions on research directions
and unsolved problems. The wide range of applications should stimulate
exchange and new ideas. The workshop will take from Friday 13.00 to
Saturday 18.00.
Keynote speakers will be:
David J. Hand, Imperial College London, one of the world's leading experts
in classification and model selection, author of 20 books, from
"Discrimination and Classification" (1981) to "Principles of Data Mining"
(co-authors Mannila and Smith, 2001)
Hans-Hermann Bock, RWTH Aachen, among the world's leading researchers in
cluster analysis and symbolic data analysis, author of the classic book
"Automatische Klassifikation" (1974) and editor and co-author of
"Analysis of symbolic data" (2000).
